A microeconomic model of discarding behaviour ArchiMer
Macher, Claire; Guyader, Olivier; Boncoeur, Jean.
This paper proposes a formal analysis of the discarding issue including the sorting labour costs. Empirical evidences from an application to the Nephrops fishery in the Bay of Biscay show that sorting is an important time consuming activity on board and a factor of discarding. However existing literature does not explicitly take into account the sorting activity and mainly focus on quota and catch constraints. The discarding model described in the paper includes sorting as a factor explaining discards. The costs of sorting landings and the time to sort them are included in the approach. The model is developed for one species studied at a tow scale with the assumption that catches are exogenous. It is shown that taking sorting costs into account, discarding...

A microsatellite study of bovine solute carrier family 11 a1 (Slc11a1) gene diversity in Mexico in relation to bovine tuberculosis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vázquez-Flores,Felicitas; Alonso,Rogelio; Villegas-Sepúlveda,Nicolás; Arriaga,Camila; Pereira-Suárez,Ana Laura; Mancilla,Raúl; Estrada-Chávez,Ciro.
Bovine tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, is a disease of socio-economic and public health importance and of significance to international trade regulation. Allelic variants of several genes have been implicated in the genetic susceptibility to tuberculosis in some human populations, but little is known in cattle. We surveyed 34 European, 18 Asian, 20 Creole and 23 hybrid bovines for polymorphisms of the bovine solute carrier family 11 a1(Slc11a1) gene, formerly known as natural resistance associated macrophage protein (Nramp1), gene by typing the cattle using two microsatellite loci closely linked to this gene. The microsatellites used were 311-22, located at the 3' untranslated region (3' UTR) of the Slc11a1 gene, and ARO28 situated about 0.6...

A Miocene perspective on the evolution of the Amazonian biota Naturalis
Wesselingh, F.P.; Salo, J.A..
Between c. 23 and 8 Ma, western Amazonia was occupied by the vast Pebas long-lived lake/wetland system. The Pebas system had a variety of influences over the evolution of Miocene and modern Amazonian biota; it formed a barrier for the exchange of terrestrial biota, a pathway for the transition of marine biota into freshwater Amazonian environments, and formed the stage of remarkable radiations of endemic molluscs and ostracods. The lithological variation of the Pebas Formation has furthermore enhanced edaphic heterogeneity in western Amazonia, sustaining present-day high terrestrial diversity in the region.

A model of hemorrhagic cystitis induced with acrolein in mice BJMBR
Batista,C.K.L.P.; Brito,G.A.C.; Souza,M.L.P.; Leitão,B.T.A.; Cunha,F.Q.; Ribeiro,R.A..
Acrolein is a urinary metabolite of cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide, which has been reported to be the causative agent of hemorrhagic cystitis induced by these compounds. A direct cytotoxic effect of acrolein, however, has not yet been demonstrated. In the present study, the effects of intravesical injection of acrolein and mesna, the classical acrolein chemical inhibitor, were evaluated. Male Swiss mice weighing 25 to 35 g (N = 6 per group) received saline or acrolein (25, 75, 225 µg) intravesically 3, 6, 12, and 24 h before sacrifice for evaluation of bladder wet weight, macroscopic and histopathological changes by Gray's criteria, and 3 and 24 h for assessment of increase in vascular permeability. In other animals, mesna was administered intravesically...

A moderate melting model for the Voring margin (Norway) based on structural observations and a thermo-kinematical modelling: Implication for the meaning of the lower crustal bodies ArchiMer
Gernigon, Laurent; Lucazeau, Francis; Brigaud, Frederic; Ringenbach, Jean-claude; Planke, Sverre; Le Gall, Bernard.
High P-wave velocities (7.1-7.8 km/s) lower crustal bodies (LCBs) imaged along volcanic margins are commonly interpreted as plume and break-up-related thick mafic underplating. This interpretation is partly challenged in this paper based on new seismic observations and modelling of the outer Voring Basin (Norway). An exceptional strong amplitude reflection, the T Reflection, is particularly well defined below the North Gjallar Ridge (NGR) between 7 and 8 s TWT. The T Reflection is located near the volcanic lava flows emplaced during the NE Atlantic breakup (similar to 55-54 Ma ago) and coincides with the top of the LCB, forming a mid-crustal dome. Based on structural and temporal relationships, we show that the dome clearly influences the structural...

A Modified Environmental Kuznets Curve for Sustainable Development Assessment Using Panel Data AgEcon
Costantini, Valeria; Martini, Chiara.
Sustainable development is a concept strictly connected with basic needs of the individuals. During the last years a number of empirical studies have tried to discover and quantify the causal relations between economic growth and environmental consumption and degradation. The most widely used empirical model is the so-called Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), nowadays applied to different polluting elements. Despite the huge diffusion of EKC studies, this model has been criticised for incompleteness of a sustainable development analysis. The aim of this paper is to build a Modified EKC (MEKC) in order to consider a wider concept of development rather than pure economic growth, including well-being aspects and sustainability of the development process....

A modified simple RFLP-PCR method for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) typing Genet. Mol. Biol.
Xiao,Junhua; Xin,Xiujuan; Luan,Xiaohui; Dongzhi,Wei; Shengli,Yang.
We describe a modified single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) typing method based on the restriction fragment length polymorphism polymerase chain reaction (RFLP-PCR). This is a simple, economical method without the need for special equipment. For most SNP loci, a common restriction endonuclease (Hind III, EcoR I or BamH I) recognizing site (RER) can be introduced into one allelic form, but not the other by two rounds of mismatched PCR. The flanking regions can be changed by as many as five bases after PCR amplification with specially designed mismatching primers so the genotypes can be distinguished after digestion of the PCR products with corresponding endonucleases.

A Mosaic Type of Development: The Agri-Food Districts Experience in Italy AgEcon
Brasili, Cristina; Fanfani, Roberto.
The Italian Industrial Districts (IDs) are now considered in the national and international literature as one of the main factors of the successful and rapid industrial development of Italy after the Second World War. In this paper we outline the general characteristics of the IDs approach and then the distinctive figures of the agrifood districts. A mosaic type of development characterised the geographical distribution of the different agrifood districts in the Italian experience. The different origins of agrifood districts often determines their production and structural characteristics of firms, with a relevant role of SMEs. In many cases, these districts originated from handcraft traditions and specific local demand. Their specialized production is...

A mudança do regime cambial e o seu impacto na balança comercial brasileira AgEcon
Ferreira, Leo da Rocha; Silva, Carlos Alberto Goncalves da; Araújo, Paulo Fernando Cidade de.
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact of the change on the Brazilian exchange rate policy implemented in January 1999, and to analyze agricultural sector transformations. Specifically, the paper is an attempt to identify the economic relations of the aggregate performance of the Brazilian commercial trade balance and total GDP or agricultural GDP, world income, and real exchange rate as of in the 1980-2006 (up to first quarter) period. The main conclusion of the study is that the exchange rate policy bands of Plano Real exerted a negative effect on exports and favored imports. With the liberation of the Brazilian exchange rate, from 1999 on, the estimated relations appear to have a positive net effect on the commercial trade balance of the...

A Multifunctional Comparison of Conventional versus Alternative Olive Systems in Spain by Using AHP AgEcon
Parra-Lopez, Carlos; Calatrava-Requena, Javier.
Sustainability of agriculture is strongly related to the multifunctional role implicitly or explicitly recognized to it in the framework of the European Union CAP. This multifunctional role entails a multicriteria approach when assessing the performance and value for society of farming systems. Multicriteria assessment of agricultural systems is characterized by the existence of many criteria often conflicting among then, many stakeholders and decision-makers with competing interests, and lack of information. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a multicriteria methodology that allows dealing with these problems, in a relatively easy, flexible and economical manner, and therefore it is a potentially useful tool in this field, although its application with...

A Multi-level Analysis of Public Spending, Growth and Poverty Reduction in Egypt AgEcon
Fan, Shenggen; Al-Riffai, Perrihan; El-Said, Moataz; Yu, Bingxin; Kamaly, Ahmed.
The overarching objective of this report is to use a multi-level analysis approach to assess the effects of various government spending on growth and poverty reduction and their trade-offs between these two goals and to offer future policy options to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The study involves analyses and simulations at the different levels: household, sector/region as well as macro levels. Different analytical tools are used at the different levels. Analyses at the different levels are initially executed independently, but final synergy is drawn through an integrated macro-micro framework. This new approach has enabled us to gain new knowledge as well as new policy insights. The study confirmed previous studies that universal...

A Need for Speed? Rural Internet Connectivity and the No access / Dial-up / High-speed Decision AgEcon
Whitacre, Brian E.; Mills, Bradford F..
As residential high-speed Internet access has become more prevalent, the composition of the “"digital divide"” between rural and urban households has shifted. In 2000, dial-up access rates in rural household lagged behind their urban counterparts by eleven percent. By 2003, however, dial-up access rates were equal between rural and urban households, due in part to soaring high-speed rates in urban areas. This paper explores the household decision between no Internet access, dial-up access, and high-speed access. In particular, nested logit and multinomial logit specifications are compared. The paper also uses a decomposition technique to estimate the contributions of various factors (including education, income, and infrastructure levels) to each of...

A new approach to chemical modification protocols of Aspergillus niger and sorption of lead ion by fungal species Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rafiu Awofolu,Omotayo; Okechukwu Okonkwo,Jonathan; Roux-Van Der Merwe,Renate; Badenhorst,Jackie; Jordaan,Erika.
Biomasses of five fungi species (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium austurianum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Mucor arcindloides and Trichoderma reesi were evaluated for their uptake of lead ion from aqueous solution using batch systems. Both dead and live fungal biomasses were comparatively studied for their adsorption efficiencies. The effect of pH as one of the primary factors that influences sorption efficiency of metal ions in solution was also studied. Modification of the fungal biomass with the least sorption capacity was carried out using a four-step procedure. Three different modifying agents under the optimised experimental conditions were used. The percentage uptake of lead ion by fungi species ranged from: Aspergillus niger: 6.71-64.95% and...

A New Approach to Correct for Hypothetical Bias in Stated Preference Models AgEcon
Davies, Stephen P.; Loomis, John B..
Many times economists are asked to estimate the demand for new consumer goods or services for which no market data exists. Typically market researchers and economists answer this challenge using surveys that ask about intended purchases (Louviere, et al. 2000) or what has become known as stated preference (SP) data. Tying this data to revealed preference (RP), or actual behavior, has been a target in a number of studies. Simplistic calibrations have been investigated in past RP-SP studies, such as Loomis, et al. 2001. This paper offers an alternative solution that allows the magnitude of the calibration correction to vary based on Klein and Sherman's (1997) Orbit procedure. This paper extends the original Orbit procedure of Klein and Sherman by...
